As a social media trainer, I get asked all the time, "what's the big deal, do I really need social media?" The answer is YES. Why? Quite simply, your market lives there. With over 400 million users on Facebook alone, think about the potential. Each of the social networks offers different types of opportunities depending upon the audience you are trying to reach.
I began my career in mortgages in the late 90s and no one even thought about starting a website. I remember the owner of my company saying that no one would ever fill out a loan application online. Now, if you're not there, you are conspicuously absent. Everyone does business electronically. The same goes for social networks. If you're not there, you are missing out on a huge marketing opportunity.
When I train people on the use of these tools, many times I hear that they just don't know where to start. So, if you are feeling confused or a bit overwhelmed, simplify, take a deep breath and just pick one of these three Social Media sites to start with: Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn.
