On June 27, 2003, the National Do-Not-Call Registry went LIVE on the Internet! What this means is that, signing up for the federal government's national "do-not-call list", people can block a large percentage of telemarketing calls they receive. Calls from political organizations (gee, wonder why?); charities and telephone surveyors are exempt from the law. Also, businesses that have had a customer relationship with you in the last 18 months, are also exempt.

What does this mean to you as a loan originator? This is your opportunity to let your clients, friends, family, affinity associates and basically, everyone in the world, know that they should register; how they would go about doing so; and answers to the most frequently asked questions in regard to the list.

This is an opportunity to "contact" your clients and notify them of a federal law that will have a profound effect on their personal lives - like, not being interrupted by telemarketers at all hours of the day or night, or having other mortgage companies calling your clients in an attempt to refinance their mortgage.

We recommend that since the law is about a week old (as of the date of this article), that you send a post card, email or include information in your next newsletter, immediately!

This is important! The government has provided a toll-free number to call to have your phone number removed - but it's only good for about 26 states right now. Other phone numbers will be added within the next few weeks.
